Ondudu Safari Lodge

After a dusty drive in the heat of the day, you will arrive at the Ondudu Safari Lodge. Set in a secluded valley encircled by the stunning Erongo Mountains, this piece of wilderness is a magical place where the desert, mountain, and bushveld ecosystems combine. Resting atop the granite boulders, the lodge is built from the natural stone of the area with a sprawling thatch roof. Raised wooden walkways and stone steps, hewn from the granite of the ancient volcano, connect the main lodge to the luxurious tented chalets, which are perched on stilts between giant boulders.

Tucked among the granite hills of the Erongo Mountains, Ondudu Safari Lodge invites you to reconnect with nature and history. From ancient rock art and scenic hiking trails to vibrant birdlife and starlit skies, this tranquil retreat offers a perfect balance of adventure and relaxation.

Experience comfort and simplicity in our tented chalets, each designed to blend into the surrounding landscape. Whether you're seeking peaceful solitude or a base for adventure, our rooms offer the perfect retreat with stunning views and a deep connection to nature.

Activities:

Nature drive: The Erongo Region is a geological wonderland. Its centre is formed by the Erongo Mountains, a 130 million year old volcanic ruin with breathtaking rock formations and landscapes. Over thousands of years, magma, which cooled down subterraneously, formed impressive natural scenes dominated by massive granite boulders. Especially at dusk, these landscapes offer beautiful photographic motives. The mountain range is also home to many interesting ancient rock paintings. The area is a birder's paradise with many species found there.

Paula’s Cave tour: Discovered roughly 100 years ago, Paula’s Cave was named after the archaeologist that discovered the site. Unfortunately the paintings haven’t weathered well, and were only declared a national monument in 1951. The cave is believed to have had significant spiritual meaning to the ancient Bushmen, and houses a number of ancient drawings that depict red-haired humans with extended bodies, several animals including those of elephant and rhinoceros, a group of black men with arrows, several pregnant women, and other figures holding hands. You can enjoy a scenic drive while watching for game before ending at the caves to view the paintings and take in the history of these nomadic tribes.

The Ju/’Hoansi San Living Museum: This immersive experience allows you into the heart of the local Bushmen tribe, the Ju/’Hoansi San. They will show you the old ways of hunting and gathering, and their traditional lifestyle that has been maintained for thousands of years. There are two options to choose from on this tour: The first is a guided walk through the bushveld during which your guides will advise on the local plants and their medicinal purposes, as well as what is edible. You will visit another cave with Bushmen paintings, before returning to the village. A traditional hunt can also be joined. The second is to stay and experience life in the village. You can help make jewellery, medicine, and bows and arrows, and interaction is encouraged. A highlight of the outing is the display of dancing and ancient rituals – but also the games that will bring a laugh bubbling up. You will be back at the lodge in time for lunch.

Sunrise trip: Climb into the 4x4 vehicle with one of our experienced guides and climb the mountain before embarking on foot to enjoy hot coffee or tea and a muffin as the sun graces us with another glorious day in this arid paradise.
